Does decaf have caffeine?
Decaf is not caffeine free. Decaffeination removes 97 to 99 percent of the caffeine, which leaves about 3 mg in a 240 ml cup against 96 mg for the regular version. Measured cups run from 2 mg to 7 mg depending on the bean and the method.
For nearly everyone that is close enough to zero to ignore. It takes about thirty cups of decaf to match one regular coffee.
Try it with your drink
Half-life 5.7 h · peak at 45 min · sleep threshold 40 mgWhen 3 mg is genuinely irrelevant
Sleep. Caffeine starts measurably delaying sleep onset at around 40 mg of active drug. Four decafs across an evening total roughly 12 mg, and that is before any of it clears. There is no realistic amount of decaf that reaches the threshold.
The daily limit. Ten cups of decaf is about 30 mg against a 400 mg allowance.
Pregnancy. The limit is 200 mg a day. Decaf uses under 2 percent of it per cup.
When it is worth knowing about
Decaf espresso in cafés. A decaf shot is 3 to 5 mg, which is fine. The risk is not the drink, it is the hopper. Ordering decaf at 9 pm and receiving regular is one of the more common ways people drink 64 mg by accident, and unlike a wrong milk you cannot taste it.
Elimination for medical reasons. If you have been told to remove caffeine entirely for an arrhythmia, severe anxiety or reflux, "97 percent removed" is not "removed". Herbal tea is the option with an actual zero.
Very high volumes. Someone drinking eight cups of decaf a day is taking in 25 mg or so. Trivial in the daytime, worth noticing if all eight land after 9 pm and you are unusually sensitive.
The most useful thing about decaf is not the low dose, it is that it keeps the ritual. Most people who struggle with an evening coffee cutoff miss the hot cup in their hands rather than the stimulant.
How it is made, and whether that matters
Four methods are in commercial use, all applied to green beans before roasting.
- Swiss Water process. Water and activated carbon filters, no added solvent. Reaches about 99.9 percent removal and is the choice if you want the lowest possible number.
- CO2 process. Pressurised carbon dioxide. Also solvent free, common in supermarket decaf.
- Ethyl acetate. A compound that occurs naturally in fruit, often labelled "naturally decaffeinated".
- Methylene chloride. The oldest method, and the one that generates the health headlines. Residue limits are set at 10 parts per million, and measured coffee typically comes in near 1 part per million, roughly a thousandth of a level associated with harm. The FDA and EFSA both consider it safe at these levels.
If the residual solvent question bothers you, buy Swiss Water and stop thinking about it. The difference in caffeine between methods is a milligram or two either way.
Half-caf and the practical middle
A half-caf is about 48 mg, the same as a mug of black tea. That is a genuinely useful step for the 4 pm cup: it keeps enough caffeine to feel like coffee while starting only just above the 40 mg line, so it is effectively clear within a couple of hours rather than seven and a half.
Building an evening on one real coffee earlier, a half-caf in the afternoon and decaf after dinner keeps the ritual all day and lands you under the sleep threshold by bedtime, which is more sustainable than trying to stop at 2 pm by willpower.
Common questions
How much caffeine is in decaf coffee?
About 3 mg in a 240 ml cup, compared with 96 mg for regular filter coffee. Measured cups range from 2 mg to 7 mg.
Can decaf keep you awake?
Not on its own. Four cups of decaf in an evening come to about 12 mg, well below 40 mg, the line Cira uses as low enough to sleep on.
Is decaf safe during pregnancy?
Yes within the 200 mg daily limit. Ten cups of decaf would add roughly 30 mg, a small fraction of the allowance.
